Seminar: Sport Tourism: Impact of the mega events on the Japanese society

公開日 2016.07.26

Sport is a powerful tourist attraction.  It can provide a window into the true essence of a place in terms of its day-to-day cultural practices and the celebration of physical culture. Sport attractions can drive tourism development in new destinations or diversify the tourism offerings of existing tourism areas. They are influential in shaping the way that visitors understand place and the way local residents define their collective identity. This is true whether the sport tourism attraction is based on events like the Rugby World Cup or active sport activities like hiking, cycling or golf.  Nevertheless, positive outcomes are not guaranteed. There are costs as well as benefits associated with sport tourism development. Facilitating benefits and mitigating costs requires systematic planning and strategic leveraging that must go beyond the economic and business realm. In particular, the sustainable development of sport tourism destinations requires careful planning in the social realm.
This presentation will: 1) review the concept of sport tourism; 2) summarize the current state of sport tourism activity in Japan; and 3) highlight selected aspects of social dimension of sport tourism destinations that need to be addressed to facilitate sustainable development.
