Tourism, Sustainability and Recovery: Asia Pacific Expert Outlook

Vol.1「COVID: Travel and Tourism」

Overview

Travel and tourism is extremely vulnerable to crises and disasters. The current COVID-19 pandemic is predicted to reduce global tourism by 70-80% (UNWTO, 2020). The impact is not uniform. Industry sectors such as airlines and hotels have been impacted more than retail and hospitality. Similarly, countries are at different stages of response and recovery, making it difficult for international travel to resume in its entirety. This presentation presents initial observations on the impacts, response and recovery strategies for travel and tourism. The presentation highlights industry and government response strategies, the importance of understanding consumer sentiment and changing travel motives and preferences. It also argues that recovery may be take longer than anticipated. Finally the presentation reflects on opportunities for tourism and travel to ‘build back better’ by using COVID-19 to transform both business and industry practices. Will travel and tourism be different in the future or will it revert back to ‘business as usual?
